For future reference, simply say the Item Is not working and leave It at that.
Generally speaking, they'll go through a few routine troubleshooting steps to try and Identify the defect, of which you'll obviously remain adamant that It's still not functioning. A return will be requested and In the case of the AirPods, box them. They're extremely light (depending on the model, 48 grams max - charging case & each AirPod Included), so there's no need to substitute the weight.

The one I used caused the associate to ask for the address for the account responsible for the purchase of the airpods (I'm assuming they could see whether the serial number was purchased online.)
I'd say It was for verification purposes, namely the warranty claim.
